Today I’m going to talk about a movie called Pulp Fiction.

오늘은 Pulp Fiction 이라는 영화에 대해 얘기할 거예요.

It came out in 1994 and was directed by Quentin Tarantino.

이 영화는 1994년에 나왔고 Quentin Tarantino가 감독했어요.

I really like Pulp Fiction. But it’s not for everyone. It’s quite violent and contains swearing – so I wouldn’t recommend it to people who find that offensive. And, if you’re a teacher, don’t go showing it to your junior high school class.

저는 Pulp Fiction 을 정말 좋아해요. 하지만 모든 사람이 볼 수 있는 영화는 아니에요. 꽤 폭력적이고 욕이 나와요. 그래서 그런 거에 기분이 상하는 사람에게는 권하지 않아요. 그리고 만약 선생님이시라면 가르치는 중학생들에게 이 영화를 보여주면 안돼요.

I’d definitely recommend watching it in your native language first. 

처음에는 일단 모국어로 이 영화를 보시기를 확실히 권해요. 

Because the plot is non-linear so it’s kind of tricky to follow.

왜냐하면 줄거리가 순서대로 흘러가는 게 아니라서 이해하기가 좀 힘들거든요.

And then, if you want to study it, pick out a few scenes that you like and study the language.

그리고 난 다음, 이 영화를 공부하고 싶으면 자기가 좋아하는 장면 몇 개를 골라 거기서 나오는 영어를 공부하는 거죠. 

The script for this movie is great. As it says in Wikipedia: the film is known for its rich, eclectic dialogue. So you can have a lot of fun studying it I think.

이 영화의 각본은 정말 잘 쓰였어요. Wikipedia에 의하면 “이 영화는 풍부하고 다양한 대화가 나오는 것으로 유명하다.” 고 해요. 그래서 이 영화는 공부하기에 정말 재미있을 거예요.

I’m going to talk about a couple of scenes today.

오늘은 [이 영화에 나오는] 장면 두 개에 대해 이야기 할 거예요. 

Firstly, a scene near the start of the movie when two guys are visiting these other guys to punish them for doing something wrong. 

첫 번째로, 영화 처음부분에 나오는 장면인데, 뭔가 잘못된 짓을 한 사람들을 혼내주러 두 명의 남자가 이 사람들 집으로 찾아와요.

A guy called Jules is talking to a guy called Brett.

Jules라고 불리는 남자가 Brett이라는 남자에게 말을 하고 있어요. 

And he’s just shot Brett’s friend, so Brett’s really shocked and he keeps saying what. And this is the dialogue, it’s pretty funny.

그런데 그는 방금 Brett의 친구를 총으로 쐈거든요, 그래서 Brett은 정말 쇼크를 받은 상태이고 계속 "what?" 이라는 말을 반복해요. 이게 대사인데 정말 웃겨요.

Jules: What does Marsellus Wallace look like?

Jules: Marsellus Wallace 는 어떻게 생겼지?

Brett: What?

Brett: 네?

 

Jules: What country are you from?

Jules: 넌 무슨 나라 사람이야?

Brett: What?

Brett: 네?

Jules: What ain't no country I ever heard of. They speak English in What?

Jules: What이라는 나라는 한 번도 들어본 적 없는데. What이라는 나라에서도 영어를 써?

Brett: What?

Brett: 네?

Jules: English, motherfucker, do you speak it?

Jules: 영어말야, 개자식아, 영어 할 수 있어?

Brett: Yes.

Brett: 네.

Jules: Then you know what I'm saying.

Jules: 그러면 내가 무슨 말을 하는지 알아들어?

Brett: Yes.

Brett: 네.

Jules: Describe what Marsellus Wallace looks like!

Jules: Marsellus Wallace가 어떻게 생겼는지 말해보라니까!

Brett: What?

Brett: 네?

Jules: Say what again. Say what again, (I dare you, I double dare you)

motherfucker, say what one more goddamn time!

Jules: What이라고 한 번만 더 말해봐. What 이라고 한 번만 더 말해봐, 개자식아, what이라고 한 번만 더 감히 말해봐!

The conversation we’re going to practice today is from the part when a guy called Vincent takes his bosses wife out. And she starred in a pilot once. If you don’t know what a pilot is, here’s the explanation from one of the characters.

우리가 오늘 연습할 대화는 Vincent라고 불리는 남자가 그의 보스의 아내를 [레스토랑으로] 데려갔을 때 나오는 대화예요. 그리고 그녀는 파일럿에 한번 출연한 적이 있었어요. 만약 파일럿이 뭔지 모르신다면, 영화에 나오는 배우들 중 한 명은 [파일럿을] 이렇게 설명해요. 

Jules: Well, the way they pick the shows on TV is they make one show, and that show's called a pilot. And they show that one show to the people who pick the shows, and on the strength of that one show, they decide if they want to make more shows. Some get accepted and become TV programs, and some don't, and become nothing. She starred in one of the ones that became nothing.

Jules: 그러니까 그들이 TV 쇼를 고르는 방법은 우선 한 개의 쇼를 만들어. 그걸 파일럿이라고 불러. 그런 다음, 쇼를 고르는 사람들에게 이 한 쇼를 보여줘. 그런 다음 이 한 쇼가 얼마나 잘 나가느냐에 따라 더 많은 쇼를 만들지를 결정하는 거야. 어느 쇼는 받아들여져서 TV 프로그램이 되고 어느 쇼는 안 받아들여져서 그냥 아무것도 안 돼. 그녀는 아무것도 안 됀 쇼에 출연했었어.

Kia Ora, in Stick News today, the son of the governor of Kansas in the United States of America is selling a board game with a prison theme called 'Don't Drop the Soap'.

The game is available online for $34.99.

"Fight your way through six different exciting locations in hopes of being granted parole," his site says.

그의 [인터넷] 사이트는 “손에 땀을 쥐게 하는 여섯 가지 장소를 가석방을 받을 희망으로 헤쳐 나가세요.” 라고 말합니다. 

The game’s tokens include a bag of cocaine and a handgun.

이 게임의 토큰(token) 중에는 코카인이 든 가방과 권총도 있습니다.  

John says the game is intended for mature audiences - not children - and is simply intended for entertainment.

John은 이 게임은 어른들을 위한 게임이며 - 어린이용이 아님 - 간단히 오락용이라고 말했습니다.

The governor says she and her husband are very proud of their son’s creativity and talent.

주지사와 그녀의 남편은 그들의 아들의 창의력과 재능에 대해 자랑스럽게 느낀다고 말했습니다.

No, definitely skier.

Um, I work for a shipping company. So we do, ah, transport.

No, this is my third time here in Niseko.

Niseko snow is awesome. It’s bloody fantastic. I mean it’s, ah, it never stops snowing here. And it’s so nice and light, it’s the best snow I’ve skied anywhere.

니세꼬의 눈은 정말 멋져요. 엄청 멋져요. 제 말은, 여긴 눈이 그치지를 않아요. 그리고 눈이 너무 좋고 가벼워요. 제가 스키를 타본 눈 중에서 제일 좋은 눈 이예요.
