Today I recommend watching a video by Barack Obama.

오늘은 바락 오바마(Barack Obama)의 비디오를 보실 것을 추천해요.  

If you don’t know already, Barack Obama is an American politician who wants to be the next president.

아직 모르신다면 바락 오바마는 다음번 미국 대통령이 되고 싶어 하는 미국의 정치인 이예요.

I still don’t quite understand how it works, but something like, first he has to win the race to be the Democratic candidate and then he has to win against the Republican candidate in the main election.

아직 선거 방식에 대해 완전히 이해가 안가지만 이런 거 같아요: 먼저 민주당 후보 선거전에서 이겨야 하고 그 다음 주 선거(main election)에서 공화당 후보한테 이겨야 하나 봐요.

And he has a YouTube channel and I’ve watched quite a few of his videos. And I’m so impressed by the way he talks. He sounds really intelligent and genuine. Which shouldn’t be surprising I guess, you’d hope that leaders could speak well, but that’s not always the case.

그리고 그는 YouTube 채널도 있는데 저는 거기서 그의 비디오를 꽤 많이 봤어요. 그리고 저는 그가 말하는 스타일이 너무나 마음에 들어요. 그는 정말 똑똑하고 참된 사람처럼 들려요. 어쩌면 당연히 그래야 하는 걸지도 모르지만요. 지도자는 당연히 말을 잘할 수 있기를 사람들은 기대하지만 항상 그렇지 않거든요.     

There are a lot of interesting Obama videos – but I wanted to choose one that was quite short to study. So I found one that was quite short and funny, when he’s speaking to a high school.

재미있는 오바마 비디오들이 많이 있지만 거기서 공부하기 좋게 꽤 짧은 비디오를 고르고 싶었어요. 그래서 꽤 짧고 웃긴 비디오를 한 개 찾았어요. 그가 고등학생들에게 연설하고 있을 때의 비디오예요. 

One of his points, I think, is that he wants to change the style of politics of people just attacking each other and lying and it being too much about just playing the game of politics rather than focusing on the issues.

제가 봤을 때 그가 말하려는 요점은, 사회의 문제를 푸는데 초점을 맞추지 않고 그냥 정치 게임을 하는데만 너무 몰두하고, 서로를 비난만 하고 거짓말만 하는 식의 정치 스타일을 바꿔보고 싶다는 것 같아요.

He says in the video: This is part of what we have to change. You know, folks just willing to say anything just to get elected. That’s how Washington works.

이 비디오에서 그는 이렇게 말해요: “이게 우리가 바꾸어야 하는 것 중 하나입니다. 즉, 당선에만 도움이 될 거 같으면 무슨 말이든 하는 사람들 있잖아요. Washington 은 지금 이렇게 돌아가고 있어요.”

(Note: ‘Washington’ 은 미국 정부를 가리키는 말. 미국 백악관 및 국회가 Washington D.C. 에 있기 때문에 이렇게 부르는 것 같아요. --Joon.) 

One interesting point is the way he says folks to mean people in general.

한 가지 재미있는 점은 오바마가 일반 사람들을 가리키는 말로 “folks"라는 단어를 쓴다는 거예요. 

His wife says that too. In New Zealand, the word folks isn’t usually used like that. 

오바마의 부인도 그 단어를 써요. 뉴질랜드에서는 “folks"라는 단어는 보통 그런 식으로는 안 쓰여요. 

I would say people in that sentence: You know, people just willing to say anything just to get elected.

만약 저라면 그 문장에 ‘people'을 쓸 거예요: You know, people just willing to say anything just to get elected.

I think that’s an American thing. It says in my dictionary: especially in American English.

제 생각에 이건 미국식인 것 같아요. 제 사전에는 이렇게 나와 있어요: "특히 미국 영어“ 

Anyway, Obama tells an example of the political game, in a light hearted way.

어쨌든, 오바마는 가볍게 [즉, 너무 진지한 분위기로 말하지 않는다는 의미] 정치 게임의 한 예를 들어요.

He tells the story of a debate a couple of days ago when the candidates were asked a question: What’s your biggest weakness?

그는 이틀 전 있었던 토론에서 후보들이 “자신의 가장 큰 약점은?” 이라는 질문을 받았을 때의 이야기를 해요. 

And Obama answered: I don’t handle paper that well. My desk is a mess. I need someone to help me file stuff all the time.

그 때 오바마는 “저는 서류를 잘 다루지 못합니다. 제 책상은 너저분해요. 저는 항상 서류를 정리해 줄 사람이 필요해요.”

Then the other candidates, one of them said: I’m just too passionate about helping poor people. And the other person said: I’m just too impatient to bring about change in America.

그리고 나서 다른 후보들이 말했는데, 그 중 한 명은 “저는 가난한 사람을 도와주는데 너무 정열적입니다.” 라고 말했고 또 다른 사람은 “저는 미국에 변화를 가져오고 싶어서 너무 조급해 합니다.” 라고 말했어요. 

Then Obama says: If I had gone last, I would have known what the game was. And then I could have said: “Well, you know, I like to help old ladies across the street. But sometimes they don’t want to be helped, it’s terrible.”

그리고 나서 오바마는 이렇게 말해요: “만약 제가 제일 마지막에 말했다면 어떤 게임을 하고 있는지 알았을 거예요. 그리고 이렇게 말할 수 있었을 거예요: ``길 건너의 할머니들을 도와주는 것을 좋아해요. 그런데 할머니들은 도움 받기를 원하지 않아요. 너무나 가슴 아파요.”

Kia Ora, this is Stick News. A Nova Scotia couple had a double set of twins last week, beating odds of one in 70 million.

안녕하십니까, 막대기뉴스입니다. 지난주 Nova Scotia에 사는 한 커플은 7천만에 1이라는 확률을 물리치고 2중 쌍둥이를 낳았습니다. 

Last week a woman in Nova Scotia, Canada, gave birth to four babies – a set of twin girls and a set of twin boys.

지난주 Nova Stotia에 사는 한 여성은 4명의 아이를 낳았는데, 여자 쌍둥이 한 쌍과 남자 쌍둥이 한 쌍이었습니다.  

The quadruplets were delivered by caesarean section and each weighed about three pounds.

이 네쌍둥이들은 제왕절개를 통해 태어났는데 몸무게는 각각 대략 3 파운드였습니다. 

The chance of having a double set of twins born at the same time is one in 70 million.

이중 쌍둥이를 동시에 낳을 확률은 70천만에 1입니다. 

After the birth, the father said: “It has been described as hitting a hole in one on a Par 5 in a thunderstorm while getting hit by lightning three times while the draw of your [Lotto] numbers are winning."

출산 후 아이의 아빠는 이렇게 말했습니다: “폭우가 부는 날에 파 5짜리 홀에서 홀인원을 하면서 번개에 3번 맞는 동시에 로또에 당첨되는 것과 같다고 하더군요.”

I think this is a kind of snow groomer called a Pisten Bully.

Sarah Yeah, maybe, but I like Obama much better. And Hilary seems kind of dodgy.

Mari How do you mean?

Sarah I don’t know ... she seems fake. And her husband is definitely dodgy. Did you see that clip of him talking about Jesse Jackson the other day?

사라 몰라... 힐러리는 좀 가짜 같아. 그리고 힐러리의 남편은 확실히 이상해. 얼마 전 그가 Jesse Jackson에 대해 얘기하는 비디오 봤어? 

Mari No. What happened?

Mari 아니. 무슨 일이였는데?

Sarah A reporter asked him a question and he didn’t even answer the question, he just started talking about Jesse Jackson.

사라 기자가 그에게 질문을 했는데 그 질문에 대한 대답도 안하고 그냥 Jesse Jackson 에 대해 얘기하기 시작했어. 

Mari Why?

Mari 왜?

Sarah Exactly, why? Maybe he’s trying to make people think that all Obama has going for him is that he’s African-American and he’s not competent enough to be president.

사라 그게 내말이야. 왜 그랬겠어? 아마 사람들로 하여금 오바마는 그가 흑인이라는 것 말고는 내세울 점이 없고 대통령이 되기에는 역부족이라고 생각하게 만들려고 그렇게 말했을지도 몰라.

You know when I was twenty points down, everybody loved me. Now, now, now that, now that, ah, we’re tied, suddenly there’s all kinds of stuff going on out here. But, but this is part of what we have to change. You know, folks just willing to say anything just to get elected. That’s how Washington works.

I was laughing when we had the debate a couple of days ago. You remember. Ah, and people were asked, what, ah, what’s your, what’s your biggest weakness? So I thought, you know, cause I’m like a ordinary person, I thought they meant what’s your biggest weakness.

So I said, well, you know, I don’t handle paper that well, you know, my desk is a mess, I need somebody to help me file the stuff all the time. So the other two, they say, ah, they say well my biggest weakness is, I’m just too passionate about helping poor people. I am, I am just too impatient to bring about change in America.

If I had gone last, you know, you see, if I had gone last, I would have known what the game was. And then I, I could have said well, you know, I like to help old ladies across the street. But sometimes they don’t want to be helped, it’s terrible.
